4 Best Blog Niches to Make Money (For Beginners)

Choosing a good niche for your first blog always seems like such a daunting task, but it’s really not. This article is simply meant to give you some ideas for niches. The general categories I list below are some of the best categories to make money for beginners in my opinion.

Below each category, I’ve listed a few niche examples to get the idea machine in your head going. Some of them I plucked right from the Amazon category page, so you can head back over there for some more ideas.

Before we look at the niches, let’s talk about why choosing a good niche is so important.

Why is my niche important to my blog’s success?

Your blog’s niche is basically the area of the internet you have chosen to focus on. All traffic on the internet is made up of people with various interests. With your niche selection you are targeting a specific segment of this traffic, otherwise known as your target audience.

Before you blindly choose a niche because it has high sales commissions, or you think there’s no competition, do some research first. Maybe there’s a reason why there’s no competition. Perhaps the overall search volume is a joke.

When choosing a niche, look for a few things like these:

  • Plenty of search volume, the more the better
  • Plenty of new topics
  • Always a fresh stream of newcomers
  • Segment of target audience has buyer intent
  • Multiple ways to monetize
  • You find the niche interesting to learn about, or already know it
  • Competition is fine, it shows there’s money to be made

The best blog niches to make money

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of the best blog niches to make money. These are just a few niches that I’ve had luck in, and I think have plenty of room for new bloggers. Just remember, niche selection is only part of the puzzle which it comes to making money with a niche website.

Anyways, let’s have a look!

Home and garden

Home and garden is a vast niche that has many, many sub-niches in it. As far as I’m concerned, anything you do within your home or outside around your home can fall into this niche. You can go broad and have an overall home and garden niche site, but I’d recommend that you drop down one level.

More experienced blogger might stay in the broader niche of home and garden, a sub-niche of home and garden will bring in a much more targeted audience and probably gain traction with Google faster. Here are a few examples.

1. Gardening

The competition in this niche can be fierce, if you go after all of the top keywords. Trust me, there are plenty of low competition topics just waiting for someone to write about them. I have my toes dipped into this niche right now and was surprised at how many opportunities there are.

2. House plants

If you have house plants in your home, you could create a blog in this niche. This niche is plenty big to drop down another level to a specific type of plant like bonsai trees, or succulents. You could even go another level down to a specific type of succulent. That’s really up to you.

3. Home office

I think this would be a great niche, especially if you already have a home office. If you do and are already an Amazon shopper, I bet if you step back and look around you’ll see a ton of products you could start recommending. With the recent wave of people working from home, there’s also going to be plenty of topics.

Pets

Pets is one of my favorite niches, there are endless topics to cover. I have sites in this niche and I’m confident that I’ll never cover all of the available topics in my lifetime, even with new competition always showing up. Huge volume.

4. Specific breed

If you own a pet of a specific breed, you could potentially start a niche blog about it. You’re probably already very knowledgable about that breed and you just don’t realize it. Sure, you may not be an expert. However, think about how much you could teach to people who know nothing about the breed and are considering getting their first one. You want to target newcomers in the beginning.

5. Specific type

Go up one level and make a site about a species or type of pet. Say you were going to do golden retrievers for the above example, change it to dogs so you can do other breeds. An overall dog site would be fairly competitive for certain topics, but the search volume is so huge that there is plenty of low-hanging fruit.

6. All pets

If you’re confident enough in your abilities to see this thing through and are ok with it taking a little longer for your blog to get some traction, then you can go to the top tier of the pets niche and go for an overall pet blog. It has the room for growth to turn a site into a real powerhouse but opening up categories for different types of pets and different breeds. You’ll literally never run out of topics.

Outdoors

I’ve been in and out of this niche for years, it can be competitive. The commercial potential in this niche is big though. I include every type of outdoor recreational activity in this overall category. Each one is sure to have plenty of products to recommend. The volume is there, but competition can be fierce. Stick to low-competition topics for a while and stick to sub-niches if possible.

7. Fishing

While I do see plenty of fishing sites out there, I think there’s room here. In fact, I know there’s room for a mostly info site about fishing. Fishing is something that millions of people do all over the world and it’s a hobby that is searched on the internet. Also, the products related to fishing can have high commissions if you’re into that.

8. Winter sports

This would be highly seasonal, but it would also be perfect if you already have a seasonal site on the opposite end. Like the fishing niche for instance, unless you added an ice fishing category. Hey, there’s another niche site idea, ice fishing! Anyway, you could niche down and cover snowboarding only, or stick with overall winter sports.

9. Cycling

I admit that I’ve been seeing a lot of cycling sites lately, but that’s because the price tag on some of these bikes is insane. If you only had 10k/mo traffic but the products you’re promoting are $3k – $5k each, it kind of evens out. Still room for new bloggers here, but it’s getting a little crowded…

Hobbies and crafts

Here’s another niche that’s just full of ideas. I’m not really in this niche because I’m not really into crafting and creating things, so I figured it would be difficult to create content. If you want to get into crafting niche, either be interested in learning about it yourself, already know it, or hire someone to write for you that does. Tons of volume though.

10. Sewing, crotcheting, knitting

I’ve seen a few of my fellow bloggers jump into the sewing niche lately and seem to be doing well, which is what made me think of it. I like sewing and knitting because there’s a low barrier to entry for beginners, but you can also recommend expensive sewing machines to intermediates as well.

11. Handmade gift ideas

I see this as more of a DIY hobby blog that would do well during the holidays and other gift giving times of year. A Youtube channel would compliment a blog like this well. Do you make bracelets or jewelry? Can you create custom frames for pictures? I think an entire site about create DIY gifts for people would do quite well for the right person.

12. Crafting home decor

This is another niche for a creative blogger. If you are constantly making little decorations and crafts for decorating your home, you might feel right at home in this niche. Some examples are making Christmas wreathes, wall art, table displays, repurposing thrift store items, etc. I can think of products to recommend and I know there is plent of traffic. Also another great Youtube/blog combo niche.

Conclusion

I wrote another article a while back with a bunch of niche ideas, so check that one out as well. I thought I’d write this article as well though with a few more ideas to help inspire people. In my experience the above niches are some of the best blog niches to make money, which is what most of us are trying to do. Different strokes for different folks though…
